What excites you about being on the PolicyWise board?
It is such a critical time for evidence-based policy. World over, we have experienced a fundamental shift to our reality. In every corner, decision makers are being faced with new problems that need solutions quickly, oftentimes with little precedent to draw upon. Research organizations such as PolicyWise can meet this immense challenge with thoughtful and timely data collection and analyses, allowing us to collectively recover more quickly and build a stronger future for our children and families.
What do you aspire to bring to the board – For example, what is your unique strength, skill, passion, ‘super power’, and/or interest area?
With a niche professional skillset navigating teams through significant transitions and disasters (flood, fire, recession, and pandemic) I hope to be able to support PolicyWise as it navigates its own transformation in the age of COVID.
What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
Sunday afternoons are spent with my husband and three energetic kids (6, 6, and 2) on our acreage west of Edmonton. We’re currently in the middle of an acre+ expansion of our edible flower gardens, and transforming an old pig farrowing barn into a greenhouse.

What excites you about being on the PolicyWise board?
My experience in the non-profit sector, specifically in building and expanding programs and services, has shown me the value of research and evaluation. However, many of the organizations I've worked in simply do not have the capacity to do this work on their own. PolicyWise helps fill a significant gap in the industry, informing next steps for organizations so they can have greater impact in our community.
What do you aspire to bring to the board – For example, what is your unique strength, skill, passion, ‘super power’, and/or interest area?
I'm genuinely passionate about the work PolicyWise does and hope my curiosity sparks engaging conversations around the board table.
What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
Grab a cup of coffee and go for a long walk in the river valley with my dog, Philly.

What excites you about being on the PolicyWise board?
I love the mission/mandate of PolicyWise. I feel that how we treat and support children and their families has a direct impact on the type of society we are now and will be in the future. I cannot imagine more important work, and I would like to play a part in making a difference in this area.
What do you aspire to bring to the board – For example, what is your unique strength, skill, passion, ‘super power’, and/or interest area?
I think my personal belief that we are all here to make a difference. I am pretty driven to make the world a better place one step at a time. I am very passionate about education and kids, and I am energized by the thought of helping to change our system so that every child can succeed and we can collectively demonstrate that every child does matter!
What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
For me, it is to get out into the river valley and taking some time to reflect and focus on my mental wellness. I also love an invite to mom’s for dinner…that is always great 😊

What excites you about being on the PolicyWise board?
Providers of non-medical and non-educational services to children and families are largely on their own to translate research into practice. There is no infrastructure equivalent to medical laboratories or departments of education that develop research-based methods and materials for front line practitioners. PolicyWise is one of a small number of organizations attempting to address this gap. That makes it a valuable agency, worth preserving and enhancing.
What do you aspire to bring to the board – For example, what is your unique strength, skill, passion, ‘super power’, and/or interest area?
I possess no super power, although I have the ability to hit golf balls astonishingly deep into the bushes. I do have many years of experience delivering services to high-needs children and families, which hopefully can be of occasional use to PolicyWise.
What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
For years Sunday was mostly homework day, often followed by kids’ movies (I’ve seen Annie 300 times). Now it’s varied: walks, reading, the occasional game or golf tournament on TV, often family dinners with grandkids. We like PBS mystery theatre in the evenings.

What excites you about being on the PolicyWise board?
I am passionate about the strong focus that PolicyWise maintains – identifying and applying evidence to shape policies that impact children and families. This work happens at a very high level and that is exciting.
What do you aspire to bring to the board – For example, what is your unique strength, skill, passion, ‘super power’, and/or interest area?
I think I bring two things. The first is knowledge of the field as a researcher and social worker. The second is a few decades of experience in leading large projects and teams.
What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
That’s easy. Spending time with my grandchildren – hopefully outside and doing something active. And if the rest of the family is there too it’s a wonderful bonus!

What excites you about being on the PolicyWise board?
I know the importance of the story that data can tell. It's not an area of strength for me so this post will push me into a challenging zone which I like. I am by nature a storyteller, and stories inform, teach, and guide. They map roads we've travelled, mistakes we've made, as well as discoveries along the way. Preserving these stories helps us map our own journey but also those to follow. They are the building blocks of Society.
What do you aspire to bring to the board – For example, what is your unique strength, skill, passion, ‘super power’, and/or interest area?
I have 30 years of collected stories and experiences myself from a wonderful career in the Human Services field. My superpower I think is to call people into those stories. Indigenous folks have had a difficult journey and I think Canada is in the early stages of reconciliation and reparations. The journey between the two will be difficult for "systems" to understand and acknowledge. My superpower will be to call people into that difficult conversation. I will do this in a gentle way.
What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
Take care of my family! This looks like cooking for them. Swimming or some other activity with my littles. Walking my dog. My life entire is a life of service and weekends are an opportunity to direct that service to my family. They are the fuel for my emotional tank for the week.
