PolicyWise for Children & Families’ Alberta Nonprofit Data Strategy invites Alberta nonprofit organizations to Statistics Canada’s free online information sessions throughout October.
These sessions cover several different topics on using data and statistics:
- Finding Indigenous data on the Statistics Canada website (Oct. 10)
- Overview of the Business Conditions Survey (Oct. 16)
- Communicating Data Like a Human (Oct. 17)
- Using Census Data with Beyond 20/ Professional Browser (Oct. 19)
- Health Matters (Oct. 26)
Space is limited to 30 people per session.
Fully booked sessions will have waiting lists available. If a session is in high demand, Statistics Canada may rerun the session at a later date.
Oct. 10: Finding Indigenous data on the Statistics Canada website
This introductory session will help participants navigate the Statistics Canada website and locate data, reference material and analyses from various surveys and programs related to Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Oct. 16: Overview of the Business Conditions Survey
This session introduces data on business expectations and business conditions in Canada, including obstacles such as supply chains, debt capacity and future plans. Collected quarterly, the survey provides a pulse on business sentiment applicable to all employer businesses in Canada while also producing estimates relating to business counts for women, immigrants, visible minorities, and Indigenous persons.

Learn how to use data to tell a story! This concise session covers fundamental ideas and methods involved in communicating statistics effectively. Also, learn how to communicate visually by adopting general data visualization guidelines to plan, organize, and visualize your data story.

Oct. 19: Using Census Data with Beyond 20/20 Professional Browser
This one-hour presentation introduces Beyond 20/20, a Windows-based program used at Statistics Canada to organize and manage Census data. The session covers basic functionalities of Beyond 20/20, such as re-arranging dimensions, nesting dimensions, showing how to sort and Show and Hide items, and saving data in different file formats, such as IVT, CSV, XLS, and more.

Oct. 26: Health Matters
Responding to pressing public health concerns requires key information on health status, determinants of health, and health care utilization. The main objective of this session is to introduce the audience to the main sources of health statistics available from Statistics Canada, such as data tables, infographics, interactive tools, and more. Examples include the Canadian Community Health Survey, Canadian Health Measures Survey, Mental Health and Access to Care Survey, and the Canadian Survey on Disability.
