3 new guides to support gender-diverse youth and their families

Providing parents, carergivers, and service providers with resources to help youth on their gender transition journey

This past spring, we at PolicyWise for Children & Families announced the launch of our latest initiative, Empowering Providers Serving Gender-Diverse Youth.

At the time, we shared research and resources from other organizations through our Resources for Practice website to support gender-diverse youth, their caregivers, and social-serving providers. So far, we have shared over a dozen resources.

Guides to support gender-diverse youth and their families

Today, we are launching the second part of this initiative by publishing three new guides for social-service providers in Alberta. It can be hard for families of gender-diverse youth to navigate social, legal, medical, and mental health systems as their youth transitions their gender. These guides provide information service providers can use to support caregivers.

While these guides offer helpful information and tools, each family is unique and not all resources will apply to everyone. Also, laws and services can change. Because of this, we recommend you seek current information from local organizations, legal experts, and health care professionals.

These guides are not a substitute for professional legal or medical advice. Instead, they give service providers knowledge and tools to support Two Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse youth and their caregivers.

Thanks to our collaborators

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the youth and caregivers who generously shared their experiences navigating the joys and challenges of gender transition in Alberta.

We also sincerely thank the thought leaders and service providers who shared their time, insights, and experiences with us about supporting gender-diverse youth and their caregivers.
