The quiet work of change

Inside PolicyWise’s 2025 Annual General Meeting

Across screens and communities, the PolicyWise network gathered virtually this September to mark a moment of reflection and begin the quiet work of change.

The 2025 Annual General Meeting was more than a scheduled event. It was a space for connection. It brought together people who believe in the power of evidence, collaboration, and community to shape better outcomes for children and families. The tone was thoughtful, the presentations forward-looking, and the energy unmistakably hopeful.

New faces, shared purpose

One of the most important moments of the meeting was the introduction of three new Directors to the Board. Each brings a distinct voice, grounded in lived experience and a shared commitment to equity, effective social policy and practice, and community well-being.

Aileen Burke brings a blend of frontline experience and policy insight. Her work in the non-profit sector spans more than fifteen years, and her academic focus on the Housing First approach reflects a deep understanding of how different sectors can work together.

Aileen has also stepped into the public sphere as a candidate at every level of government, always with a focus on effectively serving her community.

Kailee Smith joins the Board with a decade of experience advancing child and family well-being in the Northwest Territories. Her leadership in health and social services has spanned direct practice, research, and policy development, focusing on culturally safe, evidence-based approaches.

Kailee’s work reflects a deep commitment to Indigenous communities and a belief in social systems that listen, adapt, and improve.

Carole Stevenson-Roy joins the Board with decades of senior leadership experience. Her current role centres on communications, equity, professional development, and strategic partnerships.

Carole’s career has touched education, government, consumer advocacy, and regulated industries, and some of Canada’s most trusted brands.

Their arrival strengthens the Board’s capacity to lead with empathy, insight, and strategic clarity.

Leadership in motion

The meeting also marked a transition in the Board’s executive team. These changes were the result of careful planning and a shared commitment to effective governance.

Mark Razzolini steps into the role of Board Chair, following two years as Vice Chair. Dr. Ebony Rempel now takes on the Vice Chair position, continuing her thoughtful service since joining the Board in 2023.

Jennifer Garg assumes leadership of the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committee. While, Cheryl Whiskeyjack continues to guide the Governance Committee with steady insight.

Michelle Okere, who served as Board Chair for the past two years, now becomes Past Chair. Her leadership has been marked by clarity and care, and she will remain on the Board to help guide the new executive team and support the new Board Directors.

Together, this team will lead PolicyWise through the next chapter of its work, ensuring that governance remains responsive, values-driven, and community-informed.

Farewell with gratitude

With every new chapter, there are farewells. This year, PolicyWise bids goodbye to two Board Directors whose contributions have shaped the organization’s path.

James Grattan joined the Board in 2021 and served as the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committee Chair for most of his tenure. His guidance helped ensure that PolicyWise remained financially sound and mission-aligned.

Jessica Hutton joined in 2023 and brought a thoughtful presence to the Board’s work. Her contributions, particularly as Co-Chair of the Governance Committee, leave a meaningful impression.

Both James and Jessica gave generously of their time and insight. Their dedication to PolicyWise’s vision will be remembered with gratitude.

Practicing the quiet work of change

As part of the meeting, we shared our 2024–25 Annual Financial Report. The report reflects the organization’s continued commitment to transparency and accountability. It is available for public viewing here.

More than anything, the AGM reflected the quiet work of change. This is the kind of work that grows through relationships and steady collaboration. It is not always visible, but it is always present. It shapes systems, informs policy, and strengthens communities.

PolicyWise now enters the coming year with renewed focus, strong leadership, and a community of partners that continues to create impact together. Ready to learn, collaborate, and lead.
