Non-Profit Sector Organizational Resilience Matters

The past two-plus years have challenged the non-profit sector. Social-serving non-profits faced increased demand amidst reduced resources. Resilient non-profits were able to cope and respond to the crisis. Some built new skills and strengthened their organizations. The reality is that many more struggled to keep up with the pace of change. The fragility of the social-serving non-profit sector was among the cracks revealed by the pandemic.

Commercial organizations have long recognized organizational resilience as key to their sustainability and sucess. Organizational resilience describes the ability to predict, respond, and recover from crises. Tools to help them are plentiful. The same is not true for the non-profit sector. When PolicyWise began this work in 2020, we found little about organizational resilience for non-profits – not even a definition of what organizational resilience means. Our goal was to fill the gap.

We also created an Organizational Resilience Assessment tool and pilot tested it with non-profits across Alberta. In this newsletter, we highlight what we learned about the strengths, opportunities for improvement, and working on organizational resilience during a global pandemic. In summary, the past two years taught us that the organizational resilience of the non-profit sector matters!

Reflections on Organizational Resilience During a Global Pandemic


Research and Policy Associate, Kiran Gurm, reflects on her experiences as the PolicyWise lead on the non-profit organizational resilience project.

What I have learned over the past two-years is that the organizational resilience of the non-profit sector matters. In fact, it matters now more than ever. When I reflect on undertaking such a project during a global pandemic, I’m conflicted. On one hand, resiliency, business continuity, and adaptability are clearly relevant. On the other hand, social serving organizations are under a lot of pressure. Is now the right time to talk about organizational resilience? 
 
PolicyWise didn’t plan to roll out a project about organizational resilience during a global pandemic. But, as we set to begin in March of 2020 we had to pivot, like everyone else. There were repercussions. For example, despite interest only 10 of the 45 organizations we asked had the capacity to take part in piloting the assessment tool. Many non-profits declined. They cited severe staffing shortages, burnout, and retention issues. We saw an opportunity to support the non-profit sector through this work.  
 
We determined it was not only time, but essential to talk about organizational resilience. The assessment tool was just a starting point. So, we made a reflective guide that non-profits can use on their own. It can help non-profits put their results in context. It has questions and activities to facilitate deep conversations. We've learned that this is where the learning and growth happens.
 
It's been a tough few years. There are more challenges ahead. Mental health and other long-term impacts of the pandemic are still unfolding. Non-profits have demonstrated great resilience. There is an opportunity to harness these and continue to strengthen the sector. Now is the time to focus on building a resilient non-profit sector. There is no doubt we'll all benefit from their strength in the future.
