In July 2024, PolicyWise for Children & Families was seeking up to three individuals from across Alberta to join our Board of Directors experienced in the fields of:
- Finance
- Legal
- Human resources
- Sectors or businesses that have incorporated new or emerging tech, such as AI
At PolicyWise, we are not just committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, we believe that these ideals are embedded in governance and organizational performance. We welcome and value the unique contributions that candidates can bring in terms of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. We encourage applications that represent the diversity of the community we serve, and we are particularly interested in candidate representation from across Alberta.
The role
The Directors’ role is not just to set policy and strategic direction, but also to question, scrutinize, and monitor the management of the organization’s affairs. This is a governance role as opposed to operational management. Board Directors serve and are accountable to the PolicyWise Members.
Key accountabilities
- Govern the affairs and uphold the vision and mission of PolicyWise.
- Set the strategic framework and directions for PolicyWise.
- Approve the strategic plan and monitor the performance of PolicyWise in achieving deliverables.
- Act in the best interests of the organization.
- Attend Board meetings, Committee meetings, and Annual General Meetings.
- Ensure that PolicyWise has appropriate community representation, for example, by attending community meetings and events as required.
- Recruit, appoint, and evaluate the performance of the President & CEO.
- Promote the vision, mission, and accomplishments of PolicyWise in the community.
- Provide stewardship of PolicyWise investment funds and oversee resource allocation.
- Follow rules of conduct as they apply to the Board and its individual members.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and PolicyWise policies.
Commitments
New Directors will be appointed at our September Annual General Meeting. The initial term for a Board Director may be either two or three years, with the ability to renew terms up to a maximum six-year commitment.
The Board typically meets quarterly, with in-person and virtual options, for up to three hours per meeting. The in-person meetings alternate between Calgary and Edmonton. PolicyWise reimburses meeting expenses such as travel.
In addition to attending Board meetings, subcommittees (Governance; Strategic Advisory; and Finance, Investment & Audit) meet quarterly for approximately two hours virtually. Preparation for Board and committee meetings is essential and should be factored into the overall time commitment expected from Board Directors.
Start Date: September 2024
Term: Two- or three-year term, renewable up to six years maximum.
